The Year My Parents Went On Vacation

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

When 12-year-old Mauro is left to fend for himself when his parents go “on vacation” during the military regime in 1970s Brazil, a classic coming-of-age story unfolds.  Director Cao Hamburger’s beautiful and touching story embraces the excitement of the era as the culturally diverse community of Sao Paulo unites to watch Pele lead his country in winning the World Cup of soccer.  Filled with warmth, love, heroism, nostalgia and humor, The Year My Parents Went on Vacation is sure to become a family favorite.

I didn’t like it. It was hard to follow. Hard to get into. I watched it with a friend the second time to see if I was just being a bitch, but she didn’t like it either. And she’s a movie freak. She’s a foreign film freak.  Just didn’t like it.

But when she joins forces with the school’s hottest dancer, Chase (Robert Hoffman), to form a crew of fellow academy outcasts to compete in Baltimore’s
underground dance battle, The Streets, she ultimately finds a way to live her dream while building a bridge between her two separate worlds.

Again, MD liked this one, and I just thought it was ok. I didn’t have a lot of high expectations, but again, I don’t really enjoy this kind of movie. He does. Some do. Some don’t. And again, the older kids watched it, and the little ones watched cartoons in my bedroom.

College Road Trip

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Choosing a college can be one of the most exciting times in a high school student’s life—unless her overzealous dad decides to take the wheel for her college road trip. A hilarious and heartwarming family comedy starring Disney Channel’s Raven-Symoné and Martin Lawrence, College Road Trip comes to Disney DVD and Blu-ray™ Hi-Def with a trunk full of fantastic bonus features on July 15, 2008 from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment.

A rollicking family road movie brimming with inspired silliness, College Road Trip tells the story of a noholds-barred battle for independence between a loving but protective father and his teenage daughter. Disney Channel favorite Raven-Symoné (TV’s “That’s So Raven,” “Cheetah Girls”) stars as Melanie Porter, an overachieving high school student with her heart set on attending Washington D.C.’s Georgetown University. Martin Lawrence (Wild Hogs) turns in an uproarious comic performance as the overbearing dad who wants her to stay closer to their Chicago home—and will do whatever it takes to keep her there!

The film’s charismatic cast also includes Disney Channel star Brenda Song (“The Suite Life of Zack and Cody”) and Lucas Grabeel (High School Musical). Plus Donny Osmond, Kym E. Whitley and Albert, the most talented pet pig in Hollywood.

A laugh-filled delight for parents and kids alike, College Road Trip is the “Best family comedy of the year!” according to Roseann Rogers of KPRC-TV (NBC) in Houston. Sandie Newton of KTVT-TV (CBS) in Dallas calls it “…an irresistible family film that will have all generations laughing ‘til they cry!” and goes on to call Martin Lawrence and Raven-Symoné “a dream comedy team!”

When senior Melanie Porter (Raven-Symoné) plans a trip with her high school girlfriends to look at colleges, her police chief father (Martin Lawrence) is determined to keep her from straying too far from home. Hoping to convince her to attend a nearby school, he insists on accompanying her on the trip, but his hilariously over-the-top efforts to protect his little girl backfire in a multitude of sidesplitting ways. Add one small stowaway, an over-caffeinated pig and a busload of unexpected encounters and it all adds up to an unforgettably funny journey packed with enough high energy hijinks and humor to keep the entire family laughing.

MD loved it. The older kids loved it. They all thought it was funny as hell. Can’t remember if I laughed or not. Don’t think so. But my sense of humor isn’t like everyone else’s, so maybe it was funny. Little ones weren’t too interested in it either.

We thought it was cute. The kids didn’t watch it, but I didn’t expect them to. I really didn’t think I would like it, but I did. Turned out to be a pretty good show.
